City of Houston Planning and Development Department

Community Wide Committee
For Clean Air Policies

On May 12, the City's Planning Department invited a broad group of citizens to join a community-wide effort to examine strategies the Department might use to reduce NOx emissions, in order to help meet federally mandated air quality goals.

The committee divided into three task forces as follows:

    Urban Structure
    Urban Heat Island Reduction
    Building and Energy Codes

Urban Structure was to deal with suggestions to modify land use regulatory code to reduce vehicle miles traveled

Urban Heat Island Reduction was to explore suggestions to modify land use regulatory code to mitigate heat island effect

Building and Energy Codes was to suggest ways to modify building codes to produce greater efficiencies and possibly to propose a new Energy Code.

The groups worked for ten weeks and submitted their reports to Planning Director Robert Litke in September.
